By David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. lawmakers scolded the head of the U.S. Secret Service on Tuesday over a security breach that allowed a knife-wielding intruder to run deep into the White House and called for a broad, independent probe into the agency’s operations. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson acknowledged the agency charged with protecting the president had failed on Sept. 19 when it allowed a man to jump the fence at the home of the president, burst through the front door and run about 130 feet (40 meters) into the East Room, which is used for events and receptions. … …read more

Fence-jumper ran through much of main floor of White House: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The man who breached security at the White House this month overpowered a U.S. Secret Service officer and ran through much of the main floor, penetrating farther into the building than previously disclosed, the Washington Post reported on Monday, citing three people familiar with the incident. A Secret Service official who spoke on condition of anonymity said an alarm box near the front entrance of the White House had been muted, the Post said. …

White House tells universities to police work on dangerous pathogens

By Julie Steenhuysen and Sharon Begley CHICAGO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – The White House on Wednesday charged U.S. universities with policing their research on dangerous pathogens that could be used both for legitimate purposes and for biowarfare or bioterrorism. The long-awaited guidelines, issued by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, lay out a framework for university safety review boards to identify research that falls into this category, known as “dual use research of concern.” Such research must be reported to the federal government, the policy states. … …read more
