Los Angeles County jail system edges closer to court oversight

By Alex Dobuzinskis LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is edging closer to court oversight of its jail system after the U.S. Department of Justice found mentally ill inmates were mishandled in vermin-infested facilities where suicides are too common. Justice Department attorneys warned county officials in a letter last week that they would seek a court-enforced consent decree to resolve problems with the jail system, according to a copy of the letter obtained by Reuters. … …read more

Fire burning at Pennsylvania memorial for 9/11 victims: official

(Reuters) – A major fire broke out on Friday at the Flight 93 National Memorial’s headquarters complex in Pennsylvania, causing no reported injuries but extensive damage near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, crash of a hijacked airliner. The National Park Service said there was no damage to the memorial site itself, in a field where a United Airlines flight went down in one of four hijackings staged by al Qaeda militants on that day. The three-building complex is two miles (3.2 km) away from the crash site. The cause of the fire was under investigation, the service said in a statement. …

First Baby Is Born to Woman with Womb Transplant

In daily science news, a woman in Sweden gave birth  after receiving a womb transplant, her doctors reported today.  The 36-year-old woman was born without a uterus because of a genetic condition, but had healthy ovaries. One year after they transplanted the uterus, which was donated by a family friend, science news tells us the doctors transferred a single embryo to the new womb and delivered a healthy baby.  Source- News.Yahoo.com
